My understanding is that Mitsibishi purchased the design for the zero from a company headed by Australian designer Lawrence Hartnett

Hartnett also headed the local arm of GM - GMH or Holden cars. Hartnett designed several planes including the CAC Boomerang

I would not be surprised if Hartnett's designs were not closely based on US technology of the pre- WWII period given our alliance with the USA and Hartnett various connections to the USA.
