Per Howard's comments during the famous recorded interview of January 7, 1972:

In refering to the H-1, and the actions that they took after the forced landing, Howard said, "Then we rebuilt it and put a larger wing on it, and with that same airplane I made the 7.55 hour flight to New York with the larger wing that contained more fuel, and did not really hurt the speed appreciably, because with a larger wing, it operated at a lower angle of attact and at a high altitude it was really just as fast as the first version with the small wing."

Also, the engine was rated 750 HP, and with higher octane fuel (and overrevving) the engine was able to obtain 1000 HP. This did not change from the short wing version to the long wing version.
